FREE Viewers

To view the 3D models in the WebMolecules libraries, you need a FREE 3D Viewer plug-in for your web browser. WebMolecules supports two common types of 3D plug-ins:

  • Chime – a dedicated molecular visualization plug-in
  • VRML – the most common general-purpose 3D plug-in

The capabilities of these two types of plug-ins are different. Accordingly, WebMolecules servers up 3D models in a manner best suited for each type of plug-in. This also means that some features of WebMolecules require a specific plug-in. For example:

  • Chime is needed to view our large models (>150 atoms).
  • VRML is needed to view our orbital models.
  • VRML models “morph” between viewing styles.

Despite their differences, both VRML and Chime can each view at least 99.9% of the site’s total content.

Furthermore, WebMolecules supports the simultaneous use of both types of plug-ins. So, if you’re feeling wild and crazy, you can download and install both kinds.

In general, VRML is ideally suited for beginners with little or no knowledge of chemistry. Chime, on the other hand, is a powerhouse, well suited for professional use. Both types of plug-ins are described in detail on the following pages and links to FREE Downloads are provided:
